I forwarded some of the ladys' emails to my own Mac and easily opened the attachment within the email message. But on her Mac, when my friend launches the attached word document which shows the well known MSWORD icon she gets a white "page" with lines looking like a cartoon graphic of a letter.

I answered your question with a solution that would allow you to open Word Mail attachments, or Word documents already on your Mac with. The problem with opening attachments is both in my outlook client as well as in my apple mail client. That's why I think it is a generic issue. When emailing Word for Mac documents to PC users, they will not open whether saved michaelkorstote.com or PDF files.
